Selfmade powerful DIY Nickel Zinc Accumulator
« on: January 11, 2013, 06:39:59 AM »
Hi All,
try to replicate this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2-It0zdcKM

You only need a Nickel plate from an old NiMH Accumulator,
a Zinc nail from a dissassembled  Alkaline battery
( you can also use probably stainless steel or a copper wire for it..just try it)
and Zincoxide powder (ZnO) !

And the electrolyte is KOH (Pottassiumhydroxide) in water.

It delivers 1.9 Volts open circuit and almost 2 amps shortcircuit current !

This is a great cell and could probably still be enhanced by using just
carbonfiber electrodes where you electroplate the zinc and nickel onto
the carbonfiber first and the oxidize the carbonfiber-zinc electrode first
in another electroysis bath...

Also if you can get me a good cheap method to produce your own graphene,
just let me know and post it here.

Maybe we can electroplate nickel and zinc onto graphene sheets.
This should even have then better conduction at the electrodes which will
give more energy and power from the cells.

BTW, in the video at the end he used for the test just a 21 Watts 12 Volts car bulb,
cause he did not have any other bulb right there...

That is why it glowed so dimmly !

If you used a 1.5 to 2 Volts  bulb it would
have been very bright  and long lasting !

Many thanks.

Regards, Stefan.

Here is a Google Translator translated article about growing the right material on graphene
electrodes:

http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dradio.de%2Fdlf%2Fsendungen%2Fforschak%2F1916620%2F&act=url

This could be used to grow the right Zincoxide and Nickel and  Nickelhydroxide materials
on the graphene electrodes.
Here is a guy from youtube who explains to make graphene;

and

unfortunately the audio is quite distorted !

Yeasterday we made a Google Hangout Videochat with Calvin and Fank and we tried to replicate this accumulator.

Have a look here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zGRr73nqYA

Will be using next a Nickel plate from an old NiMh battery and see, if I can get the current as User Eflose
has got it. Calvin has already got it, but he hadn´t no incandescent bulb to show it.

Stay tuned.

Regards, Stefan.

what you can also do is a zinc-PbO2 accumulator.the electrolyte is ammonium sulfate.ANY lead plate will do fine for the cathode, just charge it up and a thick layer of black PbO2 forms ontop.

@profitis

Please post the chemical reaction formulas for the Lead zinc accumulator.

Many thanks.

it will be anode 2Zn=2Zn2+ + 4e- 0.7v and cathode PbO2 + SO4-- + 4H+ +4e- =PbSO4 + 2H2O 1.6v. Total voltage should be round 2v depending on acidity(ammonium sulfate is slightly acid).alum may be better(slightly more acid).dont use sulfuric acid as it will eat zinc plate too fast.prep your cathode by passing current btween a lead plate and a carbon rod in sulfuric acid solution beforehand, then rinse.carbon must be connected to the negative terminal of your power source and give up hydrogen bubbles.

Well I am going away from Nickel Zinc batteries to Do It Yourself...

It is just too complicated and I will better work now on the Graphite-Zincoxide rechargeable batteries,
see the example here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39rxgQ-7VOo

and the theory, sorry only in German language:

By the way, 3 days ago I almost burned up my kitchen when I tried to open up a still pretty much charged NiMH Double A
battery !

I did not know, that the Hydride metal stuff in the NiMH negative electrode can SELF-IGNITE when coming in contact with air
and thus I was lucky, that I did this experiment at my sink and not in my living room or balcony...

SO NEVER OPEN UP A CHARGED UP NIMH BATTERY CELL !

Have a look here and please SHARE this knowledge with your Facebook friends and spread it widely to not
cause any fires and damages !

P.S: I just wanted to extract the Nickel metal electrode from this NiMH cell, but it just heated up when
I tried to unwrapp the cell and self ignited the diaphragma paper and just burned up pretty hot.

ALso my kitchen was full of smoke, so I probably breathed a lot of bad fumes...

So be very carefull with handling fully charged up NiMH batteries !

Stay safe !

yes the charged anode combusts on exposure to air, same as li-ion.today i was also experimenting with cells and created a unique battery system that takes in oxygen at the cathode and spits out oxygen at the anode.electrolyte remains unchanged.im monitoring power levels carefuly,so far 100microamp at 0.2volt/1mm2 area electrodes which is very promising because 1mm2 is tiny.i have to source larger material now.
