   Hoppy, I have completed the driver part of the circuit and would like to test it out, to that point, before adding the snubbers. Any suggestions???
 

Nick,

Once you have the 15V supply rail and signal inputs connected up, you can scope the driver outputs at pins 6/7 to ground for correct waveforms. Ensure that the supply traces are kept as short as possible to the main supply bus lines and make sure that the ceramic capacitors (pins 1/4 & 5/8) are soldered directly across the pins of the driver chips. The following zeners, mosfet gate resistors and mosfets should be mounted as close as practicable to the drivers to ensure ninimum length driver to mosfet gate trace lengths.

The 15v filtered supply lines are already connected to the drivers. Not using the bipass caps, for now as I don't have them. Nor does Stalker use them on his fet driver set up.

   Magpwr: what type of cap would you recommend? Ceremic, such as ceramic disk type? Such as the ceramic 102 cap shown on Pinoy's driver.

eaglecad with plug-ins ulp & image converter + sketchup + vray.. but under skp, all components are customized.

Nice Pcb but why do you choose to use Green "Mylar capacitor" as a decoupling capacitor and also for the snubber instead of sticking with "ceramic capacitor".

Nope, it's not meant for that choice. that's just there as presentation to show the spacing and approx outlook of the entire pcb once assembled.
I used to render it automatically and the software picked whatsoever the assigned component intended for the designated item, I realized that
I assigned that component into a wrong one, no time to rename and rerun again.

Via pc, you can open that through pdf viewer. I am using adobe acrobat 11.


pcb tnr mthd means for ironing pcb method, cttng method is a mirror view,
topsilk is an optional top guide to speedup the [size=78%]component placement during assembly. [/size]

   Here's a pic of my TL494, with the mosfet drivers installed.
I received the tiny drivers instead of the regular sized ones. So it was alot more work. I'll be sure to get the right ones, next time. Along with their sockets on both the TL chip as well as the driver chips sockets.
 I'm going ahead with it anyway. Here it is so far.
I'll connect it up to the scope tomorrow.

The TL494 is very popular with solid-state Tesla coil builders. It can be "overclocked" to way beyond its specified maximum frequency (if you use genuine Texas Instruments manufactured version.) I've built an excellent TL494-based SSTC myself, with a high-power mosfet H-bridge to drive the primary of the TC proper. I didn't use driver chips though, I built drivers out of discrete transistor totem-pole and h-bridge current amplifiers, finally driving trifilar toroidal gate drive transformers for the high-power H-bridge feeding the primary. At the frequency I was using, the TL494 didn't produce a nice symmetrical signal from its two outputs so I made an inverter stage from 2n7000 mosfets that produced symmetrical push-pull from just one of the 494's outputs. Worked great. If you look for TL494 SSTC circuits you will find versions that are identical to that part of the Kap schematics you are working with.

Nick, there is a voltage-divider chain of (probably) carbon resistors in the Focus circuit of your scope. It is very common for these resistors to drift in value or even go open circuit. It is an easy fix if this is the problem, easier than changing the focus pot. You may even be able to identify the bad resistor just by close visual inspection. Be careful as this is part of the HV circuitry in your scope.

Congratulations on soldering those tiny surface-mount driver chips. I've made the same mistake, ordering SM parts instead of thru-hole, and it's a pain. Yes, definitely plan on using sockets and TH components for your next build version. Keep up the good work!

For mounting your mosfets you may like to consider using the "blue" 3-pin connectors like this:

They are a perfect fit (5mm pitch) for TO-247 style mosfet pins.  I use them a lot and they are available from many vendors for cheap.

    Yes, there are somethings that I would not do again. But I got several of the tiny mosfet driver chips, so I'll try them out. You really need pointy soldering iron tips and fine solder to do decent job on that small a chip.
   I'm waiting on some more resistors and 12v zeners for the snubbers. But I'll build up what I can until then.
   I'll see what kind of output signal I get from the tiny mosfet drivers tomorrow. 

   I don't want to risk causing any more damage to my scope until I finish the push pull driver, to see how it looks and works on the scope, before I open her up for repairs. I'll check the focus resistors. More likely than the pot, as you can tell when the pot is going out, sometimes, before it fails altogether. This happened quickly, possibly from overheating. Maybe from my fault as I left the scope covered all night long and forgot that it was still on
But I'll fix it, soon enough.

@NickZ, could also be the HV from the flyback as this is a tapped output which usually provides a couple thousand volts to drive the focus grid.

Two comments:
First, when you adjust the Frequency pot to give more cycles on the screen you are _raising_ the frequency, not lowering it. More cycles on screen = higher frequency (for a given scope timebase setting.)
Second, when you finally connect the mosfets, you probably should use a duty cycle setting that results in a tiny "gap" between one mosfet turning Off and the other mosfet turning On. This will assure that both mosfets can't be On at the same time. If both mosfets are On at the same time, this can result in "shoot-through" which can cause component failure.

Also, you can get or make "breakout boards" or adapters that will make it much easier to use the surface-mount parts in your build.

The resistor ladder for the Focus control is in the schematic section on page 192 of the pdf. It's kind of blurry, you may be able to find a better scan of the SM on the internet.
They are a bunch of 510k resistors in series, connected to the focus pot.

   I do have an original Tectronix 2205 manual,  as well as a downloaded one off of the web. I also now have the service manual that you just linked to.

   I thought that the purpose of the driver chip was to assure that both mosfets don't fire at the same time. In any case, that does not seem to be a problem.
  My intension was to have all the push pull driver components on a single PCB, as well as the kacher circuit.
But I was sent the wrong size driver chip. Anyways, it's all good, and seems to be working.

  My PC is down, and I bought a new motherboard and memory for it.  So I should have it up and running in a few days, when that order gets to me. In the meantime I'm having a hard time placing links from YT. So,  thanks for placing it for me. 
  Doing things on a phone or tablet can be a pain in the butt.
