Title: TheOne - 100% HHO Conversion Blog - JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED 4.7L 1999
Post by: TheOne on May 07, 2011, 04:50:08 AM
My objective is to convert my new toy on 100% HHO or at least the most of what I can get from HHO...

Before I start I need to find some problem (bug) with the engine since it does not start for now LOL... And some paint job to remov rust and make the jeep look like a new! I got this jeep for 1000$... so its not a new model :)

I will do first some MOD that will help for gasoline only before putting all my effort on HHO.

I ordered this spark plug:
http://extremespark.com/

I will buy this muffler 2525L area turbine:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f221/aero-exhaust-2525-turbine-muffler-963333/

It weird the official web site from this muffler seam down I hope they still exist!

I saw a lot of device on ebay to control the ECU or handle sensor for HHO, I will list them soon also some HHO cell on ebay that look good and we will debate on what is the best or making one from scratch like the design from evolvingape

Ok here a list of thing I will do on this JEEP:

* Custom Tornado device for Air Intake
* Custom Voltage Regulator
* Hot Air Intake
* PCV Can Filter
* 8 x Torque Spark Plug
* Area Turbine Muffler 2525XL
* Ceramic coating for engine (less friction, less problem with HHO)
* HHO
* EIFE for O2 / MAP / MAF Sensor
* Gasifier?
* Plasma in Spark Plug
* Water injection (not sure about this one yet)
* Boat battery for HHO / Gasifier

This is the list of most of the thing we can do to get better mileage

If you have other suggestion I will listen :)

Right now I am working on my garage roof before rain start in few days, I want to stop the leak from the roof since its an old garage, once done I will start thing on my JEEP.

My main problem right now is to start the JEEP, I buyed a ODB2 device to scan for problem and also with this one I will able to see all sensors data and see what is going on when I will put a device.

For HHO they often recommend a high amperage (high wattage) custom
alternator. Sometimes it even makes sense to install dual alternators
if there is enough room...as with everything I would get the vehicle in
a stable running configuration so mods don't create futher difficulties.

Yes, I forget to add the external battery, I will use a boat battery to power up the HHO and Gasifier, I dont want to add extra stress to the alternator

So the boat battery will recharge via solar panel or I will charge it once a week.

I finally found why the jeep was not working, now it start, a fuse located in the engine bay related to the battery was burnout, I changed the fuse and the jeep started right away.

I still have another issue with the engine, the engine is shaking, I suppose its related to the engine mount, need to check.

Today I received my ODB2 device, it work like a charm. I will use it to check the O2 sensor and see what is going on with the HHO or when I add something new

I ordered my Areo Turbine 2525XL muffler today, I will receive the muffler in 2-3 weeks... This should add a 15% in fuel economy alone

I found this on ebay, search for 2525XL.

Today I made my own tornado device here how to do it:

1. Remove all the plastic around the AIR INTAKE and find the carburator, where the air go just before the engine, like the photos
2. Take the hole diameter multiply by PI (3.141558) + 1 cm = LENGTH
3. Find a stainless steel metal sheet cut around 2" *  LENGTH
4. Divide the sheet in 8 section, Cut 1" on each section
5. With a clamp, fold each section in 2, like the photos bellow
6. Put your TORNADO in the hole

I think I found the problem related to my engine, today I also changed all my spark plug with the new TORQUE MASTER plug, One of the plug (neg touched pos), so the coil to the dead plug was also dead, tomorrow I will get a new coil and my engine hopefully will work like a charm!

Hi (and Welcome everyone as it is my first post here :) )
I'm very interested in Your work as I've the same goal on almost the same car (Grand Cherokee 4.0L)
I'm less experienced in car tuning and in many fields just stared getting knowledge, so I'm waiting for your every post.
I already have HHO cell and I'm experimenting with it, but not yet in car engine.

Have you measured MPG increase after installation of home made Tornado device?
Thanx for info and good luck!

Welcome my friend. I heard in the jeep forum that the V8 4.7L seam to be more economical then the V6 4.0L, but you will able to upgrade it to save as well...

As far for my JEEP, I still have an issue with the engine, I buyed a tool to check cylinder compression, I will start to repair the engine in the following week lol, so I dont drive with it so far. Once its repaired yes I will use it instead of using my civic hybrid LOL

My objective is to be more economical then my civic hybrid at first and then be 100% HH0

On another note I received my Areo Turbine muffler this week, so most of the thing I ordered are here, just need to repair my engine to be able to continue!

About the tornado device, some say it do nothing, some say it does something, I think it depend where you put the device on, some put in near after the filter, but its bad, the best spot to put the device its like the image I post, just before the air enter the engine... what this thing can do, probably not that much, I expect something like 2-5% economy max, but If you put all the thing together you will able to get 50%. It why I have done one, also you can buy one for 10$ with shipping on ebay, but I figured out it was more easy to do it using scrap metal I already have.

I share you approach - small steps can lead to 50% economy - I would be glad to achieve this.
I'm thinking of buying USB-OBD II connector and software, but not yet decided if I will need one. My car is running and for now I will trust on board computer fuel consumption indications.
I've read today about this Areo Turbine. I'm curious if and how much it helps.
I've also bought Volo performance chip HHO edition - don't know if it helps. I've decided to risk. But when connected with HHO, I wouldn't have to play with O2 sensors. Hope to receive it next week. And then I'll connect my dry cell and... hope it will work ;)

I've some spare metal and scissors too :-) so, if time allows, i'll try it too. Nothing to loose, 2% to gain :)

Yes I will use my onboard fuel consumption for now too

4 years ago, I owned the same jeep model and year, I putted the areo muffler, I can say its really help, for fuel and for power gain, also the sound is so cool lol

Ok I checked the compression of each 8 cylinders and 2 cylinders have 0 PSI so I need to remove the valve cover and see the issue, I guess I will need some repair in the engine :)

Without problems it would be to easy and no fun, haha ;)

I've made small progress today too. Volo chip installed; first drive after me - but only 10 miles. First feeling: about 10% less fuel consumption - but it may be purely auto-suggestion, too soon to say. Big plans for connecting HHO on Sunday, if i will have just enough time :-)

Good luck with engine!

The volo chip you have is the HHO FS2?

They are a lot of thing you can buy as chip for HHO, they are one that reprogram the ECU to run better with more hp using 87 OCTANE gas etc... I think this could help, the thing is that cost a lot around 350$, so if I buy that I will program the jeep in my area for 50$ to pay this ECU tool lol

http://cgi.ebay.ca/Superchips-3875-Electronic-Control-Unit-Chip-/350394763583?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AJeep%7CModel%3AGrand+Cherokee%7CYear%3A1999&hash=item519527c93f#ht_681wt_907
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Superchips-JEEP-Flashpaq-3875-Super-Chips-Programmer-/110693733229?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AJeep%7CModel%3AGrand+Cherokee%7CYear%3A1999&hash=item19c5dc536d#ht_3316wt_907

So if you program your ECU with that at first this will help, after add your VOLO or SIMILAR device

Keep me informed with your VOLO i will maybe buy one too, I need to repair the engine first lol

I removed the valve head, now I need to dismantle a lot of crap just to remove the cylinder head, then I will go somewhere to restore the cylinder head/valve head like a new for 375$ and put back everything back and hopefully my jeep will run like a new

Hi again,
So... after a few days break I've made a small progress.
1) VOLO chip installed (Yes, FS2-HHO edition, sorry, i've missed your question earlier)
2) HHO connected to air intake, but on separate accu in my trunk with no electrical connection to main installation.
and... after first drive (about 20 miles) no visible change in mpg.
I'm almost sure the engine is working different, as it is quieter. My DryCell is using 12- 14 ampers. I have no idea how to measure HHO output in liters. I think, that VOLO has to learn how to manage gas.
During the weekend I should drive about 80 miles outside the city and maybe than I will see some improvement.
I'm curious, if about 13 amp is enough to see the difference in 4.0L engine, but I think it should be?

Do you have some ideas ( maybe ebay links to controllers  etc ;-) ) on how to load second battery when there is some free energy on alternator? I'm thinking on some solution taken from camper van's.

Hi Milo, the easiest and cheapest way to measure your gas output is this:
1.  Get a big tub-bucket of water.
2.  Get a 1 or 2 liter plastic bottle (or whatever you have in your recycle bin from juice-soda etc).
3.  Get a long tube to connect to your output line of your HHO device.
4.  Draw a line with a permanent marker every 1/4 way up your bottle.
5.  Submerge plastic bottle in tub of water and place it so the open end is at bottom.
6.  Feed tube from HHO device up into bottle.
7.  Run your HHO device for 1 minute and stop.
8.  Measure how much water was removed from the bottle, either visually or place finger on bottom
      remove bottle so no water gets out and flip over.
9.  Post your results :)

Yes I see good controller on ebay, some with big amp and smaller one, I did not boy it so far but
they looks fine

I need to repair my garage before removing cylinder head, so I have some delay on my jeep, so lot of work :( but since my roof is no good with rain, water enter, I redo the roof with new truss it why no update!! :)

I hope in a month finish my garage and will show the new garage, I received all my stuffs related to the jeep, air intake, GPS Bluetooth with Windows CE and Bluetooth OBD2 device (I will try to use the ODB2 device on it, to see all data in realtime while I drive), I am confident after all the mod, my jeep will be more economic compared to my civic hybrid!

Also about the VOLO, does this chips is good to buy so far? I was imagining you get better mileage even without HHO with this device.

Thanx for input guys, I's quite easy to measure output ;D
As a controller, I was thinking of some automatic switch to control both batteries (Main with priority + Trunk + maybe solar panel later on), but maybe PWM... I'll think about it after I achieve some visible improvement.

Quote

Right now, I'd say: I don't know yet. I think VOLO without HHO improved mileage by about 10%. But now, with HHO I see no more difference. As I've said, hope that after longer distance it will look better, as manufacturer advised.
I wouldn't like to play with MAP and O2 sensors  :(

I was thinking of some on-board computer connected to ODBII too, but it's topic for future.

As I'm working full time job, I've not too much time for this project, unfortunately. So I'm moving slowly. But small steps to victory ;D

A new thing I came across via The ScareCrow Show, the gadgetman groove, seam to be a very optimized tornado mod, you need to do some mod on the carburator, I will try that for sure

Here a video about the mod:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSjT6LsDfGc
http://www.gadgetmangroove.com
or on youtube check all the video about the GadgetManGlobal: http://www.youtube.com/user/GadgetmanGlobal

With this mod its easy to get something like 30% better mileage! See the video, so with HHO you will need less LPM to do the same job.

Also I am thinking of buying another jeep to get another engine, or maybe a better then mine, I see one with V6 4.0 but I dont know this engine and I cannot reuse anything from my engine, so its to much job to do a swap or I need to forget about the one I have, I will see what I will do :)

I'll check this too. But now time to do some electrics. I've bitten my record in mpg. It is about 25% less fuel consumption after 14Amps HHO and VOLO chip. So decision made - this first step is worth better mounting. I'am thinking where to connect HHO cell relay. Probably the best choice is to fuel pump. I need to get another PWM, as you advised, to power second battery from alternator. And to do best measurements and testing, some switch to easily power off volo and hho. I've ordered bluetooth ODBII connector - it should work on my laptop and on PDA with windows mobile too. Hope it will arrive on Tuesday.
I'm thinking how to measure alternator capabilities. How many ampers can i draw without harming him ;)
Unfortunately some 'problem' with automatic transmission occurred. I have to diagnose if this is due to my changes, or something else.

I hope your transmission is fine, cost a lot to repair!!

25% is good, my objective is to be able at first to get the same mileage as my civic hybrid, at least something like 7L/100km, in MPG dont really know we dont use that here :) but its like 50% more mileage... but I suppose I will have some gain but will not get that at the begining but if I can get 25% like you that a good start! But with all the crap I want todo on that jeep, I guess 50% is quite possible..

Today I buy a Supership 3875 to reprogram the ECU, unfortunitly you can only program one jeep, you cannot do it on 2 differents jeep.. I got a deal from someone in the JeepForum, instead of paying 330 + shipping its 260 shipping free, So I will use this to program the ECU for fuel mode, also this improve the transmission so it a good thing to do I think, if you are interested you can still buy one from the guy, until the end of june,

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/june-sale-superchips-3875-jeep-flashpaq-lowest-price-ever-1227265/

Also I discover some good stainless steal plate at home depot or any shop like this one, the plate have some hole but for 1$ each, you can make a big size cell at no cost, its a nail plate around 8" by 4", I did not check the size but its around that.

Also the gadgetman groove, if you mention you listened the show, you get a discount of 200$, instead of paying 350$ for the mod, its 150$, I think we can still do the mod with a  dremmel tool but they are some angle you most have to get it right, we have until 7 july for the discount..

I will play with that too once I got a vehicule i can use for test hehe. I cannot plug OBD2 on my hybrid, and since my current jeep is dead I cannot test it on it, so once I got the new one I will try it, I am supposing we have the same thing or mostly the same thing, I will see when you will post your update :)

Here some shots of the metal sheet  was talking, I buy 10 of this for 0.67$ each, I dont know if they will do the job for producing HHO but I will use them at first.

The size is 5"x3"

I started to make video about the mod I will do

1. Initial test, no mod
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuYbnZuKlRc
23.97 MPG

2. Tire with max psi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvUosXGibf0
24.1 MPG - No signifiant change

Next mod is ECU Update with Superchip 3875 on Fuel saving mode, I hope to see an increase with this, at the first, the RPM idle is lower.

I ordered a Carbon monoxide CO Gas meter for measuring the effect of the mod and a air/temp speed for validating the claim about the muffler I want to install.
